GAWRC Facilitates Sensitisation on GBV and Harmful Traditional Practices in Uvwie Communities
The Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Center (GAWRC) has facilitated separate community sensitisation engagements with traditional leaders and youth groups in Urhumarho and Ohorhe II communities in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, focusing on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and harmful traditional practices affecting women and girls.
The engagements brought together traditional leaders and young people to discuss the different forms and consequences of GBV, as well as harmful traditional practices that negatively affect the rights, safety and wellbeing of women and girls.
In Urhumarho Community, the engagement was held on 16 August 2026, under the agenda of sensitisation and enlightenment on GBV and harmful traditional practices. The session provided an opportunity for the youth to gain a better understanding of GBV, its impact on individuals and families, and the role they can play in preventing violence and promoting safer communities.
A similar engagement was facilitated by GAWRC in Ohorhe II Community, where traditional leaders met with the youth group for a sensitisation session on GBV and harmful traditional practices affecting women and girls in the community.
The engagements also highlighted the importance of collaboration between traditional institutions, young people and community stakeholders in challenging harmful social norms, preventing violence and protecting the rights and dignity of women and girls.
Through these community-level engagements, GAWRC continues to strengthen awareness and encourage local ownership of efforts to prevent and respond to GBV and harmful traditional practices across Delta State.
