Ending GBV at the Grassroots: GAWRC Engages Orhomarho Community, Stakeholders During 16 Days of Activism

The Gender Advocacy and Women Resource Centre (GAWRC) on 6th Dec. 2025 held a town hall meeting in Orhomarho Community, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, in line with activities to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, to educate Women, men and youths on Digital Violence, gender based violence (GBV), harmful cultural practices amongst others.

The interactive engagement adopted a talk-and-response format, creating space for open dialogue, experience-sharing, and practical learning. Participants discussed the various forms of GBV, its impact on families and communities, and the urgent need to challenge traditions and practices that perpetuate abuse and discrimination.

Speaking at the event, the Project Director GAWRC Mr. Anthony Ternerge Iyortyer emphasized that community driven action remains critical to ending GBV. He called on traditional leaders, women, youths, and other stakeholders to take collective ownership of the fight against violence by speaking out, reporting cases, and supporting survivors.

At the end of the town hall, participants took part in a peaceful march around the community, carrying placards with anti-GBV messages, as a visible show of solidarity with survivors and a firm commitment to ending GBV and harmful cultural practices in Orhomarho.

GAWRC reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy, community engagement, and strategic partnerships to promote the rights, safety, and dignity of women and girls across Delta State and Nigeria at large.
